Setup
- ETS for GRE
- GMAC (www.mba.com) for GMAT
- Both exams are computer adaptive (will adjust based on how you are doing)
- GMAT is fully adaptive, GRE is partially adaptive
Scoring
- GRE - between 130 and 170 per section (total of 340)
- GMAT - 800 point scale
Structure
GRE
- Two essays, 30 minutes each (issue essay and argument essay)
- 2 verbal sections (30 minutes each)
- 2 quantitative sections (35 minutes each)
- Any order
- You may get an experimental section
- Total time: 3.75 hours
GMAT
- 1 essay (argument)
- 1 verbal section
- 1 quantitative section
- Integrated reasoning section (data interpretation)
- Total time: 3.5 hours
Content
GRE
- Verbal
- Vocabulary centric
- 3 types of verbal questions
- 1) identifying sentence errors
- 2) sentence equivalence (synonyms)
- 3) reading comprehension
- Quantitative
- No advanced math (won't go past algebra and geometry/probability)
- Number properties, more abstract
- Problem solving
- Quantitative comparison
GMAT
- Verbal
- No vocabulary
- Grammar is tested (sentence correction)
- Critical reasoning (verbal logic)
- Reading comprehension
- Quantitative
- Logically oriented - complex word problems
- Translate between English and math
- Work/rate and distance/rate problems
- More advanced probability questions
- Data sufficiency
Calculator Use
- GRE - Can use a basic calculator that is given to you
- Don't use it if you don't have to
- GMAT - No calculator for quant section, only for integrated reasoning
