Overview: Rate problems 

  • Core concepts, but not always easy to spot
  • Core idea
    • Rate x time = total or rate x time = distance
  • Make the problem as simple as possible
    • See if you can isolate the rate, time and distance quantities before you even start

Three kinds of rate problems

Type 1: Work rate problem with different rates

  • Rates are DIFFERENT
  • Rate and time are RECIPROCAL RELATIONSHIPS
  • Key concepts
    • To figure out combined rates, you need to figure out independent rates
    • Read question carefully to make sure you're solving for the right quantity 

Type 2: Rates are the same

  • Standardize per PROJECT on these 

Type 3: Rate Time Distance

  • At least 2 different situations 
  • Reduce the number of variables

Tip: When doing unit conversions, work with whichever is easiest
