Miller Analogies Test (MAT) Review Series: Affix Analogies

In this continuation of our MAT review video series, we approach working through a standard MAT style analogy that focuses on affixes. 

The MAT tests on a number of analogies, including affix analogies. Affixes are part of a word that indicate a definition. At the beginning of a word, these are called prefixes. At the end of the word they are referred to as suffixes. As prior videos have described, it is important to have a working knowledge of affixes to succeed on the MAT. Below we provide a systematic strategy on approaching these affix questions. 

Key pointers from this video:  

1. Identify the blank term and the pivot term. Recall A : B :: C :D.
   E.g. in this question, term B is the blank term making term C the pivot term.
2. Always note the formatting details for clues about the given analogy.
   E.g. In this case we are examining prefixes. Duo is the prefix meaning two.
3. Think about words you know that use the affix to define the meaning of the affix.
   E.g. The affix ‘pan’ is found in the word pandemic. A pandemic occurs when there is widespread disease.
4. Match the definition you derive from your knowledge of words to the given answer choices.
