High School Tutoring Interview

We recently conducted an email-based interview with Elizabeth, whose high school aged son worked with MyGuru for over a year, with several different tutors.  We sent Elizabeth a list of questions, below are her verbatim responses.

What caused you to consider hiring a tutor?

Our son is strong in most fields of study but needed one-on-one detailed explanation on certain high school math areas.

Additionally in AP Biology: the teacher moved swiftly and he wanted to review certain areas with a tutor prior to quiz and test taking. 

How much research did you do before hiring a tutor?

I read MyGuru’s website and saw how qualified the tutors were and didn’t need to look any further.

What were the main criteria you used in deciding which company or individual tutor to hire?

The expertise and experience the tutors had in tutoring was what we looked for. I figured you are always taking a chance that the student and tutor click and the tutor is able to explain in language that the particular student understands, so we just gave it a shot. We have been so pleased with the tutors with which we were paired! We utilized 4 tutors. Three have been fantastic in imparting information and our son has reaped the benefits grade wise. One tutor was excellent but explained at a higher level than our son understood and we simply tried another tutor; that one matched perfectly at our son’s level.

Based on your understanding of the tutoring options available in the market, what makes MyGuru and its tutors different (if anything)?

Reliability and flexibility of the tutors as well as the administrative staff.   I try to overhear bits of the instruction so that I can confirm that the material is being conveyed well and that our son is “getting it”. I am very pleased with each tutor’s style and method of teaching - they know their material and are very good at getting the student to understand it.

Private tutoring can get expensive.  How did you justify the cost?

No comment.

What were the results you experienced from hiring a tutor?

Much better understanding of material and better grades.

What ~3 pieces of advice would you give other parents or students considering hiring a tutor?

I have recommended MyGuru to loads of people!  I can’t speak highly enough of the tutors they offer and Mark!
